Cigarette smoking has been frowned upon for many years due to the numerous health risks involved with inhaling tobacco, both first-hand and second-hand, but with the rise of electronic cigarettes, e-cig smoking has become more appealing especially to minors. Underage vaping is gaining popularity just as vaping in general gains popularity in the wider adult market.
Vaping continues to attract attention since many kids consider it a cool new technology. The flavors used in the fluid also draw more minors to try vaping. Instead of the typical smell and taste of tobacco, the nicotine fluid has tempting flavors such as chocolate, vanilla, bubble gum, watermelon and others.
Other children may engage in vaping since they believe it is safer than smoking traditional cigarettes. This notion could stem from the way e-cigarettes are marketed as safer alternatives to tobacco. While this is true given the lessened amount of second-hand smoke and the fewer toxic chemicals in e-cig juice, electronic cigarettes still contain nicotine, which can be an addictive substance. It also uses other chemicals such as propylene glycol which can pose health risks especially to children. In addition, much evidence supporting vaping as a safer option are still not fully supported due to the lack of long-term researches examining its effects.
E-cigarettes are becoming a new trend among minors in place of smoking traditional cigarettes. This situation alarms most parents since they consider smoking inappropriate especially to children, regardless whether they are using e-cigarettes or not. Electronic cigarettes have also been restricted by local government and different schools and universities, but they are still not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration.
Many organizations also support the prohibition of electronic cigarettes to underage consumers. However, although they are illegal for minors in many states, children can still have access to e-cigarettes by purchasing online or asking an adult to buy them.
